Ilya
Repin (1844-1930) was a leading figure of realism representing modern Russian
painting. He was born as a colonial soldier’s son in the
village of Chuguev, Ukraine. After the entrance into the Academy of Arts
in St. Petersburg, he gradually distinguished himself by winning first prize
and the qualification of the 6-year scholarship studying abroad in Resurrection of Jairus' Daughter.
Barge Haulers on the Volga painted in 1873 had shown the name of “Ilya Repin” to Europe. This painting
was exhibited at Vienna World Exposition and collected spotlights.
After that, he studied in European each place, and it is one of his achievements
that introduce the first Impressionists Exhibition he witnessed in Paris
to hometown Russia.
However, after going back in
1876, a conflict came to be seen in works of Repin in interval with European
modernism and the Russian social reality.
The European great master who
ever watched it by Hermitage Imperial House collection took the conquest and,
in particular, works of Rembrandt played a big role and can watch the feature
everywhere. Under such a background, he created great historical painting that stimulated
the spirit of the Russian people, as well as portraits of people of culture.
Although He was hit by the
misfortune in which a right hand stopped almost moving in the later years, he
still continued painting a picture with the left hand. As if to prove that it
is eyes to be important for a painter.
This exhibition is the first full-scale retrospective of Repin in Japan,
including 57 oil paintings and 42 drawings in a broad range of categories
spanning his early to late years. The works to be exhibited are from the
collection of The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the center of Russian
